The sugar cane plantation which will be developed as a superior commodity in Sermayam Village, Tanah Miring District, Merauke, South Papua has now entered the initial nursery stage. The Acting (Pj) Governor of South Papua, Apolo Safanpo, visited the location of the sugar cane plantation on Tuesday 5 March 2024.
“It’s already underway, the nursery has 120 hectares and worker facilities have been built, such as offices, laboratories, employee mess and warehouses,” said Head of the South Papua Investment and One Stop Integrated Services (DPMPTSP) Service, Petrus Assem, Wednesday 6 March 2024. He said PT. Global Papua Abadi and PT. Murni Nusantara Mandiri as the implementer.
This sugar cane plantation is a National Strategic Project (PSN) which is a continuation of the Food Estate program to support the acceleration of national sugar self-sufficiency and bioethanol as biofuel.
“After doing the calculations, the availability of sugar for Indonesia and even Asia is lacking, so the only way the government can encourage this and from Merauke here is that it will be supplied throughout Indonesia and outside Indonesia and will become the largest plantation in Asia,” explained Petrus Assem.
Regarding the sugarcane seeds used, Petrus explained, they come from Australia and will go through several processing stages until 2027. “It took up to 11 months considering the company’s investment value reached IDR 53.8 trillion with a land area of 506 thousand hectares,” he continued.
The reason for developing sugar cane plantations is based on special research, Merauke Regency is a suitable area for cultivating sugar cane. In the future, plantation products will be able to improve the economic level of the community around the plantation, as well as absorbing the workforce of the people in South Papua. “This investment opportunity is very necessary to support the economy in South Papua,” he concluded.
